What is Female Libido?
Have you ever wondered why a random guy can make you hot and
bothered? Or, perhaps, you seem to find that just thinking of a
sexy incident can make you want to jump into the sheets. This
sexual desire or need is called libido. It can be affected by
many things including your monthly highs and lows, your
psychological state, your physical state, and even your
medications.
Libido is directly connected to women’s menstrual cycles. In
the few days before ovulation, women can be in an increased
state of sexual desire due to an increase in hormones. Also a
few days after ovulation, and before menstruation, women can
experience low libido.
There are many psychological factors that can affect a
woman’s libido. If the woman is confident, happy, and has
little or no stress, generally that woman will have a normal to
high libido. However if a woman is depressed, stressed, has
body image issues, or is even sleepy, they will experience low
to very low libido. For example, say someone is about to finish
up a romantic evening with their husband of twenty years. The
dinner was great and the husband was planning on giving the
wife a great time back home to get her out of a “sex life rut.”
But, the woman has gained weight since their child was born and
feels that she would prefer to keep her clothes on. This would
cause a low libido because the woman is stressed, has a low
body image, and is not confident. The husband still wants to
make her happy, but the wife’s body has other plans, of which
do not include sex.
In studying libido, one must also understand the physical
factors that can affect libido. Some problems, such as being
malnourished, underweight, overweight, or sick can cause
disruptions in hormones inside the woman’s body. When the
natural balances of hormones are disrupted, libido can
decrease. If, however, the woman is physically healthy, she can
experience normal levels of libido.
Medications can also affect libido. Some medications are
designed to increase libido by balancing or increasing certain
hormones in a woman’s body. Medications that promote an
increase in testosterone can be used to raise libido. However
there are medications that are quite common that can cause a
decrease in libido. For example, there are hormonal
contraception medications that rely on progesterone and
estrogen to lower the chance of pregnancy, which in turn lowers
libido. The hormonal contraception, also known as “the pill”
uses progesterone and estrogen to elevate SHBG (Sex hormone
binding globulin) which binds to normal sex hormones, including
the normal libido triggering testosterone, and renders them
unusable to the body. Also, antidepressants and beta blockers
can cause a lower libido.
A good libido level is generally necessary for a happy,
healthy life. With lowered levels of libido, women can
experience an increased chance of depression, relationship
stress, and even loss of energy. However, with higher levels of
libido, women can experience life in a grand and amazing way,
the way nature expected.
