Simply put, female libido is the woman's sexual drive. It is a mistake, however, to simply assume that the female libido is similar to the male one. Aside from the obvious dissimilarity of the sexual organs, there are other clear and distinct differences between the female and the male libido. For example, the male libido is typically aroused by physical and physiological stimuli. The female libido is more complicated. Men reach their sexual peak in the 20s and 30s. Why is the female libido more complex? This analogy would help. The male libido is like a straight highway in which there is a solid line from one end to another. But when there is a slight discrepancy in the female circuit board, the whole romantic evening can be forgotten.

There isn't enough literature that would concisely explain the complexities of the female libido. But there are numerous researches and surveys that provide clues to why it is decidedly different from the male libido. The results of these surveys are the following:

* No mental preoccupation -- Women tend to think less often about sex than men. Most men have a mental closet of sexual fantasies. Women, on the other hand, have mental love stories. Sexual activity, in the female psyche, is just a part of a greater and nobler relationship. Due to the absence of mental preoccupation with sex, the female libido is less prone to visual stimulation.

* Strong social and cultural influences -- Women, due to the historically traditional roles that were placed on their heads, are easily influenced by social mores and cultural norms. In a very religious society, a woman's attitude towards sex would be less permissive. Years before her first sexual experience, a woman may have been brainwashed to view sex as a duty inside marriage and a sin outside marriage. These connotations usually dampen down any interest towards sex.

* Biological responsibility -- Although two individuals carry out the sexual act, the possible results of the act is borne only by one. A woman, consciously or unconsciously, knows that she will be the one who will get pregnant and will nurse the baby. The responsibility ultimate lies on her shoulders. This makes the woman more careful in choosing partners. The female libido is invariably linked, even obedient, to the woman's plans for her own future.

* Sexual satisfaction - The sexual satisfaction experienced by men and women can be considered as an example of the classic Pavlovian theory. If satisfaction is easily achieved, then sexual acts are sought more often. The male libido, according to Perel, a psychotherapist, can reach orgasm within an average of four minutes. The female libido will need more than 10 minutes. With orgasm being reached less often, the female libido may not even bother with the slightest sexual stimulation.
